Soil Microbiology and Flowers

This week on the farm, I have created this video about soil microbiology and its relationship with flowers. I am very excited about this video because it lets me share some of my science nerdiness with the world, while I am waiting for the soil at my farm to thaw. Please share with me what you think!

The warmer weather this week is getting me very excited about flowers. I am hoping that in a few more weeks I will be able to plant some of my cool flowers outside, like these flowers above. These are called Sweet Peas. Sweet peas are grown for the flower, not the pea pod that is created after the flower has been fertilized. The great part about having sweet peas in your bouquet or flower garden, is their amazing scent. Sweet peas are very cold tolerant. I actually grow them in my garage, which usually stays around 40F. They can typically handle temperatures as low at 20F! This makes them a great flower for us, because in Zone 4b, I can still plant these flowers outside in April. I am very excited to have 12 different sweet pea varieties that I am growing this year.
